There is a pool leak so where in the pool losing water from?
The saying “Could be a hundred and one places” is true when it comes to finding a
leak (or leaks) in a swimming pool. The pool lose of water could be anywhere such
as
- Leaking through holes or tears in the liner that are sometime difficult to spot.the
pool steps may have cracked or worn
- Water loss around the pool fittings fitting, underwater pool light, main drains,
skimmer or returns, accessories
- The leak may not be anywhere near the pool... Valves, filters, worn pumps, filter
lids, pipe fittings, multi-port could all be suspect
- Losing water through cracks in the concrete pool shell, skimmers, inlets, or main
drains.
- Corroded heat exchangers, defective pipes, broken joints.
What may have caused my pool to leak and lose water?
- The age of the pool or pool liner, incorrect use of chemicals affecting the liner,
(as mentioned above wear and tear on a liner). Children poking the floor or walls
with sharp object trying to retrieve an item that's fallen in the pool
- Vandalism, animals that have fell into the pool scrambling and clawing their way
out of the pool
- Accidental damage, heavy or sharp object that have fallen in
- Ground movement from frost or recent building work close to the pool.
- Defective foundations, poor design, inferior construction and incorrect building
methods
These all have the potential to cause a pool leak plus many others.
The problem with a pool leak
- The cost in depleted pool chemicals
- Loosing heated water
- Higher water bills
- Pool leaks can undermine foundations, an cause subsidence or ground heave. Call us

crack in tileband and pool render the pool leak was found on a horizontal line crack

Leak detection.
A cracked skimmer on a panel pool
Although you cannot see the crack in this image, the damage is on the underside of
the skimmer and the liner shows signs deterioration too We also found cracks in the
pool returns. These are some of the places to look for when investigating where a
pool leaks
How do you find and fix a pool leak?
Detecting a pool leak starts with finding out what type of construction is your swimming
pool.
- Concrete: Is it tiled, rendered or mosaic?
- Liner?
- Fibreglass?
- One piece pool?
There are a few things you can do yourself, to find out where the pool may be leaking
- Have you noticed any water marks • Wet patches • Puddles • Mushy grass near the pool
or a wet floor in the plant room?”
- Do you know how much water your pool is decreasing by?
- When did you notice the pool was losing water?
(Do not worry if you don’t know the answers)
Finding a pool leak starts with eliminating the individual parts of a pool system
until it’s narrowed down to hopefully one problem. You may find several leaks and
located in different parts of the pool system
